Other tunnelling methods
In the wake of the recent article on concrete sustainability in the September issue, (print and on-line), readers of World Tunnelling now have the opportunity to express their views on concrete sustainability.
The article, Designing Sustainable and Economic Tunnels (Part 1) by Derek Penrice and Bradford Townsend, may not have given concrete a glowing sustainability report. But the concrete industry should be given credit for trying to improve its environmental credentials. That is why it wants feedback on its progress and to help steer future environmental improvements.
As a consequence, the UK-based Concrete Centre is now welcoming all shades of opinion through its stakeholder consultation conducted via its website.
Following a basic log-in, readers are asked to complete a 10-12 minute questionnaire which includes rating concrete, timber and steel in terms of inspirational qualities, flexibility and sustainability; awareness of concrete industry sustainability targets; rating aspects of sustainability in terms of importance such as CO2 emissions, energy usage in production/transportation, and waste to landfill; and rating the targets the concrete industry has set for 2012.
The questionnaire gives you a chance to tell the concrete industry what it is doing wrong (and right) and could contribute to ‘greener’ tunnel construction.
