UK-based BAM Nuttall Group (BNG) will be refurbishing the northbound carriageway of London’s Blackwall Tunnel under a US$76 million contract signed recently with Transport for London.

BNG says the project comprises a complete upgrade of the tunnels emergency walkways and systems, as well as the installation of new ventilation, fire and life safety systems, communications, high quality lighting, CCTV surveillance, radio interrupt systems and variable message signs.

Running under the river Thames, the Blackwall Tunnel forms a vital link into London and comprises two bores. The 1,364m-long northbound tunnel was opened in 1897 and will remain open to traffic during the day while the refurbishment works in the other bore are proceeding. Work will start this month and take three years to complete.
