TBM-driven tunnels
Dragages Hong Kong, a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction, has signed a US$450 million contract for the construction of a stretch of the MTRC Express Rail Link no. 820 between Hong Kong and Guangdong.
The line will consist of two parallel single-track tunnels each 3.5km long, and will form part of the future railway that will link Hong Kong to Shanghai and Beijing in 2015. Works have just begun and are expected to last five years. Two TBMs will be used to construct the two 9m diameter tunnels.
One of the biggest challenges anticipated will be negotiating the considerable number of obstructions, including deep-laid foundations of current structures and metro lines, encountered along the route.
