Vietnam-based infrastructure construction specialist Cavico has announced that it has signed a new agreement with state-owned Lilama for additional construction work at the Hua Na Hydropower plant in Vietnam. The current US$11.9m contract signed is in addition to the one signed with Lilama in April 2009 for US$4.9m.
Under the new agreement, Cavico’s majority-owned subsidiary, Cavico Power & Resource, will be responsible for the construction of the sub headrace tunnel No. 2, plus a water diversion tunnel and a surge sharp tank.
Hai Thanh Tran, vice president of Cavico, said: “The sub headrace tunnel, diversion tunnel and surge sharp tank are all critical components of a hydropower plant.” He then added: “Once again, we are pleased that this client has entrusted us with the most critical parts of the overall project. This additional work builds on the successful completion of Cavico’s initial scope of work, the construction of a diversion tunnel and coffer dam, which validates Cavico’s strength and capabilities in the field of underground construction.”
Spread out over 20km2 near Dong Van village in Nghe An province near the Chu River, Hua Na Hydropower plant will have twin turbines and will cost around US$250 million. It is expected to generate around 180MW of power and will supply 706kW million annually. The plant will help meet electricity demand in Vietnam where some provinces suffer shortages. The project is expected to be completed in five years.
