TBM-driven tunnels
Thailand Underground and Tunnelling Group (TUTG) has recommended that the government construct a US$6.5 million, 100km tunnel that will prevent the sort of flooding that recently saw large areas of Bangkok under water.
The proposed tunnel would be built from Bang Pa-in in Ayutthaya to Samut Prakan province, draining water into the Gulf of Thailand. According to the Bangkok Post, the project could be completed in two years.
Similar in concept to the SMART tunnel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, TUTG proposes a double-deck tunnel structure that would have different water and traffic-carrying capacities according to the prevailing weather conditions.
Under normal conditions, the upper deck is used as a road. In conditions of minor flooding, the upper deck would still be open to traffic, but the lower deck would be used as a flood conduit. During major flooding, both upper and lower decks would be closed to traffic and turned into flood conduits to facilitate the drainage of run-off.
In addition to advancing these and other proposals, TUTG is busy preparing to stage the 2012 World Tunnel Congress and 38th general assembly of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association in Bangkok, between May 18 and May 23. The event will be held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre under the theme ‘Tunnelling and underground space for a global society.’
